The ETH Career Center (Universitätstrasse 19, 8092 Zurich) operate the website ethcareer.ch (hereinafter referred to as "ETH Career Center"). On this website you can find information about our organization, use our online services and contact us. The protection of your personal data is of great concern to us. For this reason, we inform you in this privacy statement which data the ETH Career Center collects, processes and discloses from visitors and users of ethcareer.ch for which purpose within the framework of the applicable data protection regulations, and which measures have been taken to ensure the security of this data.
Data protection serves to protect personal rights. It obliges data processors to act lawfully and gives data subjects enforceable rights with regard to the processing of their personal data. According to § 3 of the Law on Information and Data Protection of the Canton of Zurich (IDG ZH), personal data is all information that relates to an identified or identifiable person. This includes, for example, information such as name, address, telephone number, e-mail or IP address.
Each time our website is accessed, information is stored in a log file by our hosting provider Switch AG, Zurich (Switzerland). These so-called log files contain information about the date and time of the website visit, accessed files or pages, status codes, and system information such as browser, operating system and language and version of the browser interface. This data does not allow any direct conclusions to be drawn about the specific person.
IP addresses are also stored in log files. For us, these cannot be easily assigned to a specific person.
If you wish to view our website, we collect the aforementioned data that is technically necessary for us to display our website to you and to ensure its stability and security.
The processing of this data is carried out for the following purposes:
The web server log files are stored for a period of 6 months from the end of the access. After that, the web server log files are automatically deleted, unless a detected attack on our network infrastructure leads to civil or criminal prosecution of the attacker and thus requires further storage.
The use of certain offers on ethcareer.ch (e.g. contact forms or web applications) may require further collection, processing and longer-term storage of personal data such as name, address or e-mail address. In order to use these offers, you must agree to the General Terms and Conditions (GTC). The processing of the data entered during registration is based on your consent. You can revoke your consent at any time. To do so, simply send us a message by e-mail (careercenter@ethz.ch). The legality of the data processing already carried out remains unaffected by the revocation.
Personal data will only be disclosed to third parties (e.g. to other authorities) if this is required by mandatory legal provisions (e.g. official requests, court orders) or for the purpose of legal or criminal prosecution (e.g. in the event of attacks on the ETH Career Center network infrastructure). Disclosure to third parties for other purposes does not take place (exception see below point 9: Use of Google Web Fonts and point 10. Integration of Google Maps).
Notwithstanding this, the ETH Career Center may commission service providers to further process the data collected via ethcareer.ch for the above-mentioned purposes. The ETH Career Center and the commissioned third-party service providers are obligated by means of legal, technical and organizational measures to ensure compliance with data protection regulations.
In addition, it may happen that third party content, such as videos from YouTube, maps from Google Maps are integrated within this online offer. This always requires that the providers of this content perceive the IP address of the user. Because without the IP address, they could not send the content to the browser of the respective user. The IP address is thus required for the display of this content. We endeavor to use only such content whose respective providers use the IP address only for the delivery of the content. However, we have no influence if the third-party providers store the IP address, e.g. for statistical purposes. Insofar as this is known to us, we inform the users about it.
By using the ethcareer.ch offers, you consent to the use of Google services (Google Web Fonts, Google Maps and You Tube) and thus also to the disclosure of data to the Google service. Please note that Google has a different data protection practice than the ETH Career Center. Our website uses Google Analytics, a service of Google Ireland Ltd, Google Building Gordon House, Barrow St, Dublin 4, Ireland and Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043, USA; both together "Google", whereby Google Ireland Ltd is responsible for the processing of personal data. Google uses cookies that are stored on your device and enable an analysis of the website by you. The information generated by the cookie about your use of the website will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. We have added the code "anonymizeIP" to Google Analytics. This ensures that all data is collected anonymously. Only in exceptional cases will the full IP address be transferred to a Google server in the USA and shortened there.
Google evaluates the collected data on our behalf so that we can get a picture of the visits and user behavior on our website. This enables us to improve our services and the website content as well as its design.
You can prevent the storage of cookies by adjusting the settings in your browser accordingly (see our comments on cookies). You can disable Google Analytics by downloading and installing the Google browser add-on.
We use the Google Tag Manager on our website. This collects data about user behavior on our website and forwards it to our analysis tools. Google Tag Manager has no access to the data, it only collects the data. Global Site Tag (gtag.js) is a tag management system developed by Google. It is used to track and manage data such as traffic, sales, conversions, and more through a single line of code. It allows businesses to implement tracking tags for various purposes, such as Google Ads, Google Analytics, and more.
The US Privacy User Signal Mechanism is used on a website to allow the user to give or withhold consent for the processing of their personal data. This mechanism can be implemented in different ways, e.g. by an opt-in or opt-out system, which allows the user to choose which data may be processed and which may not.
When calling up ethcareer.ch, so-called temporary cookies may be used. No additional programs in the form of so-called "social media plugins" are used on ethcareer.ch, which transmit IP addresses directly to the providers of social networks. The control elements of the graphical user interfaces (so-called "buttons") visible on ethcareer.ch are exclusively links to the corresponding providers of social networks.
For the uniform display of fonts, we use Google Web Fonts on ethcareer.ch. The required web fonts (fonts) are loaded from the server by your browser when you call up ethcareer.ch in order to display the texts and fonts correctly. In doing so, your browser establishes a connection to Google's servers, whereby Google becomes aware that ethcareer.ch is being visited by an end device with your IP address. The provider of this site has no influence on this data transmission. The use of Google Maps is in the interest of an appealing presentation of our online offers and an easy location of the places indicated by us on the website.

We have embedded YouTube videos on ethcareer.ch, which are stored on http://www.YouTube.com and can be played directly from ethcareer.ch. YouTube is a service of YouTube LLC, 901 Cherry Ave, San Bruno, CA 94066, USA, which belongs to the Google Group. These videos are integrated in "extended data protection mode", i.e. no data about you as a user is transmitted to YouTube if you do not play the videos. Only when you play the videos, the data mentioned in the next paragraph will be transferred. We have no influence on this data transmission.
By visiting ethcareer.ch, YouTube receives the information that you have accessed the corresponding subpage of ethcareer.ch. This occurs regardless of whether you have a YouTube or Google user account and whether you are logged in there or not. If you are logged in to YouTube or Google, your data is directly assigned to your account. If you do not want the assignment with your profile at YouTube, you must log out before activating the button. YouTube stores your data as usage profiles and uses them for the purposes of advertising, market research and/or demand-oriented design of its website.
